Collection: Phil Edwards Classic

If you couldn’t already tell, the Phil Edwards collection is the pride and joy of the Hobie lineup. Edwards was the first surfer to win the Surfer Poll in ‘63 and remains a favorite among respected surfers across decades of surf culture. Without a doubt, Phil made an unmistakable impact on surfing. The Phil Edwards Classic continues that legacy in a collaboration with shaper Adam Davenport, showcasing the kind of board building and surfing Phil loved.

The Phil Classic starts with a classic-weight blank featuring a 2-inch balsa and cedar T-band with cedar offsets. This construction delivers the old-school feel that earns the “classic” name. As seen in the Bruce Brown films, Phil favored this glue-up, and he continued building boards like this into the 1990s. Adam describes the outline as “all Phil, all the way,” with a speed shape that thrives in the pocket. A clean foil and finely pinched rails provide a smooth trim, while a touch of roll and flip in the last foot helps the Classic hook up with ease. Each board features a numbered laminate from Phil. Once these laminates are gone, they’re gone. If you’re a Phil fan or looking to refine your traditional technique, the Phil Edwards Classic delivers.
