The Unko Ray by Timmy Patterson for Hobie Surfboards

The list of Hobie influencers from years past is strong with personality: Hobie, Edwards, Carroll, Munoz, and Propper. Some of the unsung heroes, however, are the factory workers and surfers from the ’60s and beyond, specifically the Patterson brothers: Ronald, Raymond, and Bobby. This trio put in the hard work that transformed shaped pieces of foam into rideable surfboards. Bobby Patterson, in his own right, was an accomplished surfer and was viewed as an equal by the likes of Phil Edwards.

This Timmy Patterson shaped noserider is packed with family DNA, drawing heavily from Uncle Raymond Patterson. From the full nose and rail to rail concave to the parallel outline and continuous rocker, it blends performance rails and edges with ample vee for quick pivot turns.

The history of the design dates back to the mid-sixties, but Timmy adds modern flavor to make this board approachable at just about any loggin’ break in SoCal. Over the years, Patterson has built Hobie plenty of excellent performance longboards. The Unko Ray stands as a capable noserider for those not looking for something overly traditional, like an Uncle Buck, yet still desiring that same lift on the nose with added performance off the tail.
